The Renegauge Grows By Two Models at SHOT 2022

The sporting model of the Savage Renegauge has been available for a few years now and has been an impressive firearm. This gas-operated shotgun utilizes Savage’s D.R.I.V. system, which stands for Dual Regulating Inline Valve. This gas-operated system bleeds excess gas and ensures consistent reliability, ejection, and reduced felt recoil. Savage has taken that same system and pushed it into a Security and Competition Market.

The Renegauge Security

The Renegauge Security model gives you a light and short home defense style shotgun that’s feature-filled. It’s a 12 gauge shotgun outfitted with a six-round magazine tube and 18.5-inch barrel. That larger magazine tube is clamped to the barrel with a clamp I’ve fallen in love with. This clamp features an M-LOK slot to accommodate attaching a light or other goody.

The stock comes with a set of spacers that allows you to adjust the length of pull, which is ingenious. Honestly, why did it take this long for a company to realize how valuable this is? It rocks, and the Renegauge Security model came equipped with a short LOP making it comfortable and easy to shoulder.

The barrel is fluted, so it balanced well and honestly looks good. The controls are massive and very easy to engage, and I can’t help but love it. From the ground up, the Renegauge can be the best stock defensive shotgun on the market. With an MSRP of $1,499, it will be priced with the big boys.

The Renegauge Competition

We get the brightly adorned red Renengauge Competition model on the flip side. The comp model is a fair bit bigger with its 24-inch barrel that’s outfitted with a nine-round magazine tube. It’s huge, swings easy, and feels great. Instead of a bead of ghost ring with have a huge fiber-optic insert mounted to a vent rib.

Like the Security model, Savage installed huge controls, the stock adjusts for LOP, and the barrel’s fluted. The Competition model looks large but handles well and is relatively lightweight.

The Renegauge Competition will be outfitted with Benelli threads for chokes. The Renegauge Competition has an MSRP of $2,089 and is ready out of the box for your next 3-gun match.

The Savage World

I got to shoot some clay pigeons at Range Day with both guns. The people at Savage were generous with their ammo, and I blasted a ton of them out of the sky. The guns were soft, shooting with minimal recoil. I’m talking about a lot less recoil than I expected, and I’d hazard to say they are softer shooting than most semi-auto guns. Sure, it was just birdshot, but still, it was a dandy.

I’m looking forward to seeing both of these guns on the market, and I’m certainly gonna grab the Renegauge Security for my own home defense needs.

The Truth About Recce

Recce, recce, recce, it’s a term everyone’s tossing around these days. Recce rifles seem to be the hotness, and recce as a term is a great way to make it to the front page of Reddit’s Tactical gear subreddit. Recce rifles are cool, but recce, or recon blows. Going on a walk in your gear and talking about how much you train isn’t recce. Also, you are not British, so why do you say recce instead of recon?

Anywho, today I’m not going to poo poo all over the recon/recce train, but I do want to clarify that doing Recon sucks. The Marine Corps loves to recon stuff, and we have an entire MOS dedicated to it. I wasn’t a Recon marine, never went to selection, never even really wanted to. Before my first deployment, my Company commander put together his company-level recon squad.

My Recon Experience

We were going into a part of Afghanistan that was all foot patrols and very little to no mobile work. Covering an entire AO on foot is challenging, and he saw value in having a force separate from the traditional platoons that could go personally deliver the commander’s intent. We would recon routes, gather intelligence, observer, report, and all that fun stuff.

The Brits gave us the word Recce

We would be a long-range patrol squad designed to act as an organic recon element, as well as constant QRF and a resource the entire company could draw from when necessary. This created a flexible force that didn’t handicap another platoon’s operations.

The entire squad was made up of studs, well, almost. I had no reason to be on this squad. I was an average Marine at best. I made it to the squad for one reason. I could carry weight. Lots and lots of weight and seemingly could do so for very long distances. That’s exactly what I became, Battle Cattle. They slapped a machine gun in my hands and backpack full of gear and sent me on my way.

How A Recce patrol often looks.

Thus I was tossed into the world of recce as a mule with a machine gun, and let me tell you, it sucks.

Recce In Real Life

Recon work isn’t all fun and games. It’s all about being still, cold, and miserable. Recon is extremely valuable to a company commander and helps a unit plan, plot, pursue, and punish the enemy. However, it’s not glorious. I remember our first real recon mission.

It involved humping 10 miles in one direction and marking villages, their locations, and their size. We gathered the names of elders in the village and did the human intel portion as well. Recce wasn’t exciting, wasn’t fun, and certainly wasn’t as sexy as the internet would have you believe.

A lot of Recon work is just stairing through an optic.

Some nights we sat in holes, freezing as the harsh Afghan winter set in. Being calf-deep in water from midnight to four AM isn’t glamorous. All we did was watch a house where we suspected Taliban activity. We saw nothing but our breath hanging in the air.

You think that scouting the bad guys would lead to fighting the bad guys, right? Well, we engaged in plenty of exchanges of lead and harsh language, but a firefight meant the mission was over. Unlike a special operations recon team, we were just a slightly smaller Marine squad, so if we got made, we still packed a punch. The mission is to observe and report, and it can be extremely boring.

Putting In Work

So recce sucks. I mean, from a practical perspective, it sucks. Recon work is not an instant payoff. It doesn’t give you immediate satisfaction. Think of recce more like an investment. Most of the miserable days don’t pay off, but sometimes they do.

One of our greater successes came from identifying the position where Taliban forces were firing PKMs at our helicopter. The position was a run-down compound, abandoned a long time ago. It provided them cover and concealment from ground-based observation. Once we identified that position, we denied them access, and incoming helicopters didn’t get shot at anymore.

Another success came from identifying the trails Taliban fighters were using to enter the towns we were patrolling in. They’d take up positions and open fire, knowing that we’d approach with caution to avoid harming innocent Afghan villagers. We denied the Taliban access to these trails and denied them the ability to use the village as cover.

Of all those successes, my absolute favorite comes from the capture of an HVT Taliban explosive manufacturer. We knew he was in the area, and we worked tirelessly. We knew which villages he was operating in. So we began an intensive search, with plenty of recce involved. We hid in holes, in tree lines, crawled on our stomachs to avoid detection.

Mission from Patrol Base Detroit on October 25, 2012, Helmand Province, Afghanistan. (Dan Lamothe / Staff)

He operated mostly at night, so we became nocturnal. It paid off when we bagged his ass and his explosive-laden Moped-type scooter. Our Afghan Army soldiers got answers out of him, and he revealed who he was, and we bagged and tagged him.

(Side note, our Afghan Army guys launched 40mms into his scooter to detonate the explosives, and it was friggin sweet to watch.)

Staying Low

Recce work isn’t just walking through the woods and chastizing people on Reddit for not training like you. It’s not the best AR 15 stock, barrel, or optic. It’s an involved, unglamorous job that’s seemingly miserable. However, when it pays off, it’s tough to match that high and feeling of success.

Heritage™ Expands Barkeep™ Revolver Line

Heritage Manufacturing, Inc., producer of the classic-style Rough Rider® single-action revolvers, takes “compact” to a new level with the introduction of the new Barkeep™ Boot series revolvers.

The Barkeep Boot is a downsized version of the recently introduced Barkeep revolver—a single-action rimfire based on the company’s popular Rough Rider series handguns available in two- or three-inch barrel lengths. In the spirit of the Old West, this new revolver from Heritage Mfg. moves the Barkeep from “waistcoat carry” to “boot carry” with its diminutive one-inch barrel and sleek bird’s head grip profile.

Chambered for .22 LR (will accept the Heritage .22 WMR cylinder), the Barkeep Boot comes with a new 1-inch barrel for optimal discreet carry in a revolver. Adding to the Barkeep Boot’s easy-carry nature is an elegant bird’s head-style grip, which offers a comfortable hold and a flowing aesthetic profile with less bulk when compared to the traditional “plow handle” grip.

Beyond the barrel length and grip, the Barkeep Boot delivers the familiar operation and quality construction of the Rough Rider series single-action revolvers on which it is based. This includes a hammer firing system, manual safety, classical notched rear sight, and black oxide barrel, frame, and cylinder finish.

Three models are offered with custom wood black grips, custom gray pearl grips, and custom-engraved wood grips. All revolvers come with a custom Heritage wood-handled ejector rod for removing empty cartridge cases.

For more information on the new Barkeep Boot or to see the full line of exciting small-bore single-action revolvers and specialty firearms in the Rough Rider and Barkeep lineups, visit HeritageMfg.com.

Shotguns will never be fully gone. As much as they get relegated to niche use and the sidelines, it’s tough to get rid of the old scattergun. During most of the GWOT, the shotgun was relegated to breaching, guarding prisoners, and the occasional close quarter’s fight. These days they aren’t broken out unless you have a very specific situation, but they might be getting new life due to the growing use of hobby-grade drones in attacks on allied forces.

Much like the IED, the use of these drones has grown rapidly. They’ve become a growing problem in the last five years. One accelerated by the widespread availability of hobby-grade drones. As they’ve gotten cheaper and more effective, it’s become easier to turn them into weapons.

The Drones and the Problems

Drones are a colloquial term. These are typically referred to as quadcopters in the hobby world. I love them, and they’re a fun way to relax, fun to pilot, and a great little hobby. The term drone got slapped on them as much as hobbyists protest the term.

In Iraq and Syria, these hobby-grade drones have become an effective way to deliver explosives onto allied targets, civillians, and more. While the payload must be small due to weight restrictions, the investment is small. You don’t need to lose a terrorist with an S-vest or get close enough to fire an RPG or toss a grenade.

Instead, you can sit back and fly your toy, loaded with explosives, right where you want it. These drones have become more effective, faster, have longer ranges, and often feature high def cameras that allow the operator to fly the drone without having to expose themselves.

It’s a serious problem, and it’s one in which shotguns might become a capable tool.

Where The Shotgun Shines

As a shotgun fan, I get to hear lots of people tell me shotguns are only effective for bird hunting. Well, they are great for hitting small, rapidly moving targets as they cross the sky. Scatterguns fire scattering shot, and that could make them valuable for taking drones out of the sky. There are a few options the shotgun can use to dissuade the use of drones…forcefully.

Before we get into that, let’s talk about why the shotgun should be an option. First and foremost, it’s already in the armory. It’s a tool soldiers already have. It doesn’t require tons of investment, trials, or contracts, plus the inevitable wait for the weapons to trickle out. A shotgun offers an instant option that’s lightweight, easy to use, and cheap.

The Benelli M1014 uses a semi-auto action which makes for rapid follow-up shots, and the Mossberg series shotguns aren’t slouches either. They can be used to quickly track and take down flying drones with relative ease.

Nine pellet 00 buckshot is the military load of choice. It’s plenty enough oomph to take down a drone, but nine pellets don’t produce the best spread for a flying target. I think a three-inch load of Number 4 buckshot would work well. That’s 41 pellets forming a solid cloud of buckshot to take a drone down.

It’s still cheaper than a new weapon and is a commercial off-the-shelf option. Birdshot likely won’t work reliably, but a heavy load designed for bigger birds might be a half-decent option pending testing.

Purpose-Built Ammo

Buckshot works wonders on drones, but that’s not the only option. There is a purpose-built anti-drone load called SkyNet. The name alone wins awards from me. This dedicated anti-drone load shoots a weighted net from a 12 gauge shotgun. The net catches the drone, tangles it up, and takes it down.

This load could be safe to use in bases, COPs, and FOBs since it doesn’t fire a load of buckshot. A big concern would be shooting a low-flying drone and sending pellets into personnel or property. A net might hurt, but it’s less likely to cause serious harm. That being said, don’t shoot each other with nets.

Drones don’t stand a chance when netted up. These rounds aren’t cheap, but they are a lot cheaper than an entirely new weapon. While proper testing should be done prior to their adoption, the load seems impressive enough for taking down drones. Plenty of videos online tout their use. Wired recently tested them with good results.

This will be better fodder for the pump actions than a semi-auto, but they are available. Heck, if they could scale them up to 40mms, we might have a bigger, more effective net as well.

Taking Drones Down

Drones, UAVs, quadcopters, whatever you call them will likely be an issue for some time to come. They might not change the face of warfare, but they are a real threat to our servicemen and women. The quicker the DOD starts to try to solve the problem, the better equipped our warfighters will be to counter the threat. Shotguns just can’t quite be retired and can provide a valuable tool for defeating drones.

Women’s Vertx Fury Hardshell Jacket

Being a woman within the firearms and outdoor community can be tough when it comes to clothing choices. We need items that move with us and don’t hinder the job at hand yet still allow us to feel presentable and attractive. We shouldn’t have to look like a man to do the job of one. The Vertx Womens Lifestyle collection fills the clothing vacancy that we have been so long waiting to be filled. Our first article of clothing we talked about was the Kesher Ops Pant. Now, the Womens Fury Hardshell Jacket. A stylish fitting jacket that allows you to discreetly but easily get to your carry gun while saving you from the elements, whether those elements are hot, wet, or cold. This is truly a versatile, comfortable, and attractive jacket.

Purpose

Those who know, know, who Vertx makes their clothing for. Those who need to do a job yet stay neutral looking and comfortable. The Fury Hardshell is a type of jacket that can be worn with any outfit as it is a neutral piece of clothing. It can also be worn in almost any weather.

From the Company

“We launched the Men’s Fury Hardshell which was received very well, so we wanted to make sure women had a seam-sealed and taped waterproof hardshell with a 37.5 that was complimentary to a woman’s figure without “shrinking it and pinking it” like some other vendors will. While maintaining that rapid access with the hand pass-through pockets to any appendix tools they may need.”Vertx Designer

The “shrinking it and pinking it” mindset is no joke when it comes to womens clothing. Taking a Mens clothing design and using vibrant pinks while slimming it to the midsection is the exact opposite of what women in this industry need. Tucking it closer to our mid and upper section only kills our mobility and doesn’t allow us to blend due to the bright colors they choose to attract to women. Thankfully, Vertx doesn’t have that mindset. When releasing this line they used women engineers to design a completely new piece of clothing with a duty mindset that has a comfortable yet feminine fit. Finally.

What is the material used 37.5?

“VaporCore™ powered by 37.5® Active Particle Technology captures and releases moisture, keeping the body in its ideal microclimate of 37.5% relative humidity with a core temperature of 37.5 degrees Celsius” It is a comfortable, flexible, light, and non noisy material that truly does keep your body at a comfortable climate.

Stephanie’s AAR (After Attirement Review)

Note: I am 5’2, 125 lbs, and wear a size small. I am also wearing Vertx Women’s Burrell Stretch Jeans from the same Lifestyle Line, size 02 with inseam of 30, medium wash.

I have been wearing this jacket for around 8 months now, which means through the summer, fall, and now winter. During the summer I was able to wear it all the way up to 70 degree weather to act as a sunslayer, and protect my skin from the sun. I did not overheat at all. I would keep it in my car during these months just in case it started to rain. Due to the type of fabric it doesn’t have the same miserable crunching sound that a lot of thin rain jackets have so it makes it a lot more comfortable to wear throughout the day. I would also wear it during colder months and layer under it. It kept me dry from the snow/sleet but gave me room to layer while not looking sloppy. At work throughout the summer I would throw it on as well to warm me up from the air conditioning.

One of my favorite things about the jacket that I noticed right away was it solved the hood problem that I so often see with rain jackets. Other rain jacket hoods tend to droop down and cover your eyes. The Vertx Fury Hardshell has what I describe as a fitted hard ring within the edge of the hood which creates a structured hood. This keeps it up off of your eyes and on your head.

Another favorite thing, the access pockets. While they are created to allow you to discreetly grab your appendix carry gun, I found it to be useful for another reason, access to other layer pockets. If I am wearing a sweater under the jacket and it’s raining or super cold I will put my cell phone in the pockets of the sweater that is under the jacket. Due to the access pockets, I don’t need to totally unzip my jacket to get to these pockets, I can just go through the Fury Hardshell jacket pocket.

The sleeves are comfortable yet tight enough so they stay on your wrists and don’t hang over.

The only con I’ve seen with this jacket, and it could very well be my own fault as well, was that the fabric doesn’t wash things off as easily. I was wearing it during work and got some grease on the shoulder, it didn’t rinse off during a normal wash and I will have to scrub to remove it.

A neutral, feminine, and comfortable jacket that allows women to do their job in any type of climate and environment. The Vertx Fury Lifestyle Line now includes the Fury Hardshell Jacket. A lightweight jacket that protects you from the elements and still enables you to access the tools on your waistline.

The Vertx Womens Lifestyle Collection has given me the ability to have a line of clothing that I can go to the range in, go to work in, but also run errands in without giving my profession away.

The Greatest Dad Joke – The VHS-2 Hellion

I have to give credit, a lot of credit, to Springfield Armory on this one. I missed this one completely, and I have talked about how bringing the VHS-2 into the states would be a good idea. The VHS-2 Hellion arrived today, and dammit I want one. I blame Forgotten Weapons.

A modern 5.56 bullpup from the factory already supplying you the XD line?

Yes. Do it, Springfield!

They did.

After dropping a clever dad joke level hint that is worthy of acknowledgement in its own right, (VHS, get it? If you’re in your 20’s maybe not) they released the Hellion this morning.

Yes. It’s named the Hellion, in classic Springfield naming style.

No, I don’t care. I want it. It’s a VHS-2. VHS-2 Hellion… whatever. Cool bullpup for 2022.

Ian over at Forgotten Weapons has featured this rifle previously and his announcement, and TFB’s, are worth the clicks.

This marks and interesting return for Springfield into not only a powerhouse domestic manufacturer, but a high demand service rifle importer. They are going to be able to leverage deals that smaller companies cannot. Combination importer/manufacturer startups of niche shops simply cannot do that in volume.

I think the Hellion is going to create more buzz and positive momentum for Springfield Armory. More than their mono-lower SAINT could with its experiment in minutial engineering, anyway. That is the type of thing I expect from niche builders.

What do I mean? Springfield’s entry into AR’s was a strong move, their M1A line is mostly good looking nostalgia. The SAINT brought them competing in AR-15’s. The AR they brought to market was very, and I do mean very, well thought out given the standards at the time. A simple BCM adorned middy gas gun.

Bringing the VHS-2 Hellion in hits right along that same logic chain and in a couple of very solid market spots. New import. Never before available modern service rifle. Expanding the bullpup market.

There are Springfield Armory owners aplenty who are brand loyal to an almost astonishing degree and this is a rifle that can expand horizons. For the weird rifle aficionados (hello, it is I) this brings a coveted one to market here. It can show the efficacy of another bullpup in the US market which could encourage companies (looking at you, Lithgow) to bring more foreign rifles to the states and vary the offerings.

And this newer offering can motivate legacy bullpup makers like Steyr and IWI to take a hard look at refreshing their offerings too.

You win two internets Springfield.

Understanding Cartridge Choice in Pistols

As a concealed pistol instructor, I frequently field questions about what pistol cartridge is the best to conceal carry. The classroom atmosphere forces me to play the diplomat. My typical answer is something along the lines of, “Carry whatever you shoot the best”.

While I have my personal opinions on the topic of cartridge choice, I would like to talk to you all a little more frankly than when I am trying to appease the hardheaded, self-proclaimed, self defense experts… that attend my basic concealed pistol course.

For the purpose of this article, I will be only discussing the 9mm Luger, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP

Pure Fuddlore

The argument that I would like to discuss first continues to prevail amongst those unwilling to accept change. Every time I hear this statement I cringe, because there is so little thought behind it.

“The .45 (ACP) makes a bigger hole.” While this statement is factual, let’s do a little math. Little being the operable word. The typical projectile diameter of the .45 ACP, the largest cartridge we will be discussing, is .452 inches. The diameter on the 9mm Luger is .355 inches. That equates to a difference of .097 inches or about 2.5mm for those of you across the pond or north of north. Not to be cynical, but basing your self defense cartridge choice on nothing but a projectile being less than a tenth of an inch larger in diameter is asinine.

Ten Years of Data

A well read man by the name of Greg Ellifritz wanted to answer the question of which cartridge is the most effective in self defense once and for all. Over a 10 year period, he kept track of every shooting he could get statistics for; he talked to participants of gunfights, read police reports, attended autopsies, and searched high and low for any reliable accounts of what happened during these encounters. While I highly recommend reading his whole report, I will focus on the information he gathered on 9mm, .40S&W, and .45ACP.

9mm Luger
Number of people shot – 456
Number of hits – 1121
Percentage of hits that were fatal – 24%
Average number of rounds until incapacitation – 2.45
Percentage of people who were not incapacitated – 13%
One-shot-stop Percentage – 34%
Accuracy (head and torso hits) – 74%
Percentage actually incapacitated by one shot (torso or head hit) – 47%
.40 S&W
Number of people shot – 188
Number of hits – 443
Percentage of hits that were fatal – 25%
Average number of rounds until incapacitation – 2.36
Percentage of people who were not incapacitated – 13%
One-shot-stop Percentage – 45%
Accuracy (head and torso hits) – 76%
Percentage actually incapacitated by one shot (torso or head hit) – 52%
.45 ACP
Number of people shot – 209
Number of hits – 436
Percentage of hits that were fatal – 29%
Average number of rounds until incapacitation – 2.08
Percentage of people who were not incapacitated – 14%
One-shot-stop Percentage – 39%
Accuracy (head and torso hits) – 85%
Percentage actually incapacitated by one shot (torso or head hit) – 51%

One thing to note is that the majority of the engagements using 9mm were by members of the Military. Military members use very ineffective ball or FMJ ammo. This contrasts the many police departments surveyed that use .40S&W and .45ACP. Also, LEOs will carry hollow point ammunition proven to incapacitate at a much higher frequency. The Military is starting to field JHP ammo.

I think the biggest take away from this study is that the top three self defense cartridges performed similarly; they were all within a few percentage points from each other. I am confident that if the Military’s use of the inferior FMJ ammo was taken into account, there would be even closer performance among cartridges.

FBI Study Into Cartridge Choice

So, if in real life applications these three cartridges perform at nearly the same rate, what’s the big deal? To answer that we will dive into research the FBI conducted in 2014 for their new service pistol and cartridge choice.

Before we get into the study itself, let’s talk about the history of law enforcement cartridge choice. Up until the 1986 Miami Dade police shootout, many law enforcement organizations were using smaller caliber pistols chambered in cartridges such as the 9mm and .38 Special. Afterward, the police found that their smaller caliber handguns were ultimately ineffective against the shooters. They blamed the injury and deaths of several officers on their service pistol’s ineffectiveness. After the smoke settled, the agency made the decision to change to the 10mm cartridge, and again later to the .40S&W. Many other police and law enforcement agencies then followed the FBI in switching to a larger caliber service pistol.

The FBI began eyeing another change in caliber sometime around 2007, this time back to the 9mm Luger. Why the change back? The agency found that officers were able to put accurate shots on target faster with 9mm than it’s larger cousins. In a profession where a high percentage of rounds fired miss their intended target, having a pistol that aids in officer accuracy can be the difference between stopping a high casualty event or making a bus full of nuns collateral damage. How is the 9mm increasing hit percentages? The round simply has less felt recoil. They also concluded that a swap to 9mm would lower training costs and increase reliability in service weapons. They could achieve this all without sacrificing terminal effect on target.

Understanding Expansion in Terminal Ballistics

Despite what “knockdown power” arguments you have heard on television or a forum, there are only two ways to permanently stop an attacker. The first is through disrupting the central nervous system, causing substantial damage to the brain or spine. The second, and more likely route, is through depriving the brain of oxygen through severe blood loss. During the FBI’s study, they concluded that all three cartridges were able to disrupt enough tissue to cause the blood loss needed to incapacitate an attacker. Essentially, carrying any one of these cartridges would allow a shooter to be successful as long as they have good shot placement.

Conclusion

One can make many arguments for the 9mm as a superior pistol cartridge choice based on the data I presented. The FBI chose it, the cartridge has less recoil, and frankly I enjoy shooting it. As much as I would like to claim victory in choosing the superior cartridge on my self defense journey, I would instead like to leave you with one final parting thought:

Carry whatever you shoot the best. The hits are what stop threats.

Volquartsen ENV-9 22 LR Pistol – Sootch00 Review

30 Super Carry – The little caliber that… might?

Federal launched a new caliber this year aimed at two things. Increasing the capacity of current 9mm/40S&W frames and doing so in a round that meets the defensive caliber standards we’ve come to know and understand through the developments of the last 50 years in ammunition technology.

30 Super Carry is one of the first genuine efforts to step away from 9mm after the ‘FBI Reformation’ that held 9mm is the standard to work to. It’s an interesting concept. I don’t know if it will take due to the combination of 9mm’s entrenched efficacy and the usual higher cost of new calibers, however being that you are getting both more rounds and probably less felt recoil it may find a comfortable niche in the market. This is especially true if it turns the current micro pistols like the P365, Shield Plus, and G43X/G48 into effective 14 or 15 shot capacity pistols with greater shooter comfort and recoil management.

Here’s the official release,

Federal Ammunition Announces an All-New Handgun Cartridge: 30 Super Carry

ANOKA, Minnesota – January 12, 2022 – Federal Ammunition is proud to announce its all-new 30 Super Carry cartridge and will showcase this new product launch at the 2022 SHOT Show (Booth No. 11838), January 18-21 at the Sands Expo Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Federal Ammunition has 100 years of experience producing ammunition and is the ideal company to develop a better concealed carry cartridge for the next generation of self-defense pistols, and that’s exactly what the company has accomplished with this introduction. With so many advantages over existing cartridges, 30 Super Carry stands to revolutionize self-defense.

The new 30 Super Carry cartridge provides the power of the 9mm Luger with comparable felt recoil. The .312-inch diameter projectile carries the same energy as 9mm Luger at the muzzle, with better ballistics than 380 Auto. In addition, it could be chambered in smaller, easier to conceal handguns, once gun manufacturers start to offer guns designed and built specifically for this cartridge.

“The self defense market is a driving force behind new gun ownership. When considering what the market is looking for when it comes to self-defense, they have told use that concealability, comfort in carrying and ability to shoot, 9mm performance, and the ability to carry more rounds,” said Federal’s Handgun Ammunition Product Director Mike Holm. “There is a lot here, and that is what drove the development of 30 Super Carry.”

With a higher capacity and smaller frame size than the 9mm but with similar muzzle blast, recoil and terminal performance, 30 Super Carry offers a decided advantage.

Learn more at: https://www.federalpremium.com/30supercarry.html.

“Our 30 Super Carry cartridge hits like a 9mm, which means shooters can increase capacity without sacrificing performance,” continued Holm. “With ballistics that mirror the 9mm, there’s no doubt regarding the 30 Super Carry’s effectiveness for self-defense.”

30 Super Carry’s introduction is truly unique. While most new cartridges struggle with availability for years before production catches up with growing demand, 30 Super Carry will hit the ground running with not only loads from Federal but also sister brands Speer, CCI Blazer and Remington. In fact, it’s the first time in history so many manufacturers have offered loads for a new cartridge on “day one” of a new product introduction.

Whatcha got Brandon? A Smoothie? – Brandon Herrera’s SCAR 17 Review

The FN fans, like myself, were not immune from the Mike ‘The Blizzard Thumb’ Jones’ frozen rifle tests… and, sadly, our favored rifle, the SCAR 17, froze under the pressure.

Actually, it froze under the water, because the laws of physics. The SCAR 17 is many things, but capable of bending the laws of space and time is not among its powers. Tame recoil in a lightweight .308 though, that it does nicely.

authors scar17 in the cold and snow
It does, in fact, work well in both the cold and with a suppressor on if not left to freeze all the bits that should move into ones that don’t move anymore.

Caleb and I discuss that here,

A long video about a long video and why, sometimes, the internet gets worked about ‘out-of-contexts’ things.

Anyway.

Brandon has joined we happy Belgian Waffle Folk and gives his opinions on this fine firearm. Yes, it is a fine firearm. Even when it froze and rusted under freezing and thawing conditions that cause rust.

Enjoy!

The FN SCAR 17 continues to be one of the standard setting battle rifles. It’s almost 20 years old at this point, but it’s a design that seems set to last. It built on upgraded concepts from the M1 Carbine, the FN BAR and FN MAG, and the AR. It brought together the best modern concepts (to that point) and seen steady upgrades from that point.

It was before the longer handguard revolution swept the industry (just prior to) and companies have solved that, and several other wants of the ownership group, both government and private, that came out. It remains a premier .308 (and emerging 6.5 and potential 6.8x51mm host) that taught us that optic quality matters.

You can see that in the video, the RDS is M O V I N G on the top of Brandon’s SCAR. But, to be fair, look at any rifle, especially an AK, fire in slow motion and it is disconcerting. Everything flexes… a lot. Like a very uncomfortable amount of ‘I don’t think anything flexed that much…’ And on that note I discourage you from looking up bridges and skyscrapers in high winds.
