Second Call Defense

Name Doug

Subject Second Call Defense. SHAWN/AARON
Message I have been an animal control officer for 15 years. I often see people who’s dogs get attacked by loose dogs while they walk them lawfully down the street. It often results in injuries to the dogs, bites to those attempting to break it up, and in our town, the attacks resulted in 2 dogs who were attacked, dying at the scene.

I live in another jurisdiction and I have my own dogs, and a CCW.

My dogs are of the “Carpet Shark” variety. Chihuahuas I have rescued. Two I bottle fed and hand raised, the smallest just 3lbs.
Well- My Wife and I were walking our leashed dogs on the sidewalk when a Rottweiler came rushing out from across the street- You see where this is headed. Two large men about my size 6’4, from the Rottweiler house followed after their unleashed dog, the male at the rear was requesting the guy ahead get their dog because “He will snap!”

All the while I was calm. I didn’t do anything that would escalate the Rottweiler into a problem.
Things ended up okay and we walked on. My Wife commented on how calm I was. I explained, “I was watching the Rottweiler very closely” If there was any attack on my little dog, I would have shot the Rottweiler and been totally justified in doing so as any bites from a dog that size would critically injure if not kill my tiny dog.

I also told my Wife, that is when things could have gotten tricky, as I am sure those men, even in the wrong, would react to me shooting their dog.
With gun in hand and both men possibly angry as Hell and looking to assault me, I would have a predicament of having to fight both with the possibility of being disarmed, or pointing my gun at the, or due to a disperity in force, having to shoot one or both unarmed men if attacked.
Luckily, none of the above occurred, but if it did it would have been a mess. Needless to say, I began considering Second Call Defense.

The legalese at the bottom makes me pause a bit. Do you know of anyone who has used them?
After that event, $300 for a Defender membership seemed like quite a deal.
Regards, Doug.
PS. Aaron is fat

Everything you do is to protect yourself and your family. Whether it’s house insurance, car insurance or carrying a firearm. After a house fire, you’ll rebuild. After a car accident, you’ll get a new car. After a self defense incident make sure you are there to help them pick up the pieces and not rotting in a jail cell. by Tony.J.P. on Nov 10, 2015
RATING: ★★★★★

I found WLS while listening to archives of the PRP and they had Lil on the show and she mentioned WLS and I had to get more of one of the worlds sexiest voices. I’ve listened to most of the archives now. Jeremy, Lil and Shawn know what they’re talking about when it comes to guns, the other three, especially Aaron are pretty much just there for comedy and politics. The way they all give Aaron crap is hilarious (after about his 5th interruption I want to give him a mushroom stamp). Overall show is awesome, Jeremy needs to swear more and needs his own section titled “Vote from the rooftops!”. Bring back the drinking game. All the hater reviews saying the show needs to clean up can shove it, it’s good the way it is. If you want a serious straight gun talk show this isn’t for you. If you want a good laugh, to catch up on politics and some firearms knowledge this is it. PS Lil’s 4 months absence was BS, I almost dropped you a star because of it.

Subject What made me sign up for Second Call Defense
Message Dear We Like Shooting,

First off I just want to say thank you for the awesome show that you provide each and every week. It is top notch and I look forward to every show every week and possibly getting the chance to meet you all in person. Keep up the good work.

I had a revelation the other night that kept me up in bed following an incident that occurred on November 4, 2015 that finally made me realize that having self defense insurance may not be a bad idea.

Now I usually work at night between the hours of 11 pm and 6 am as a cable contractor splicing fiber optic cable for some big companies. Technically speaking we are not allowed to carry our firearms at work but seeing how we have to work alone at night in some bad parts of cleveland, my foreman and I will usually carry because our lives are worth more than our job.

On November 4, 2015 we started work a little early just to try and get a few more jobs done. We will usually stop at the local store to pick up some food and a couple drinks to get us thru the night ( non alcoholic of course.) But when we came out we noticed that a local police officer had pulled up behind a car that was parked in a handicap spot. A white guy was driving and a black man was in the passenger seat. The passenger got out of the car to see what was going on. The officer told the black male to get back in the car. They exchanged a few words which I didn’t hear. Then the black male of about 6’6″ about 350 lbs took of running and the officer pursued after him. At this point my foreman and I walked over to see what was going on. The officer told the man to get on the ground. Long story short the man wouldn’t comply and the officer shot him with the taser. My foreman and I were watching the officer scream at the man to get on his stomach. We asked the officer if he needed some help. Of course he said no at this point. Not even 30 seconds later the man ran out of his shoes and pants to get the barbs from the taser out of him. The officer chased after and got a hold of his shirt and the black male had stripped it off l, and in the process try to physically assault the officer. At this point me and my foreman took action to try and take this big guy down. We ended up both tackling him to the ground and taking control of him so the officer could place the handcuffs on. Meanwhile the whole time the white driver was still sitting in the car watching what was going on. As the black man was being put in the back of the cruiser 3 more units pulled up to arrest the driver and search the car. They ended up finding a crack pipe and quite a few bags of crack on the ground where the black man’s clothes were.

The thing that made me sign up for SCD was the fact that the black man appeared to be a crack dealer and the situation could have turned bad really fast. If I would have had to pull my firearm to assist a police officer how much legal trouble would I have gotten into? Chances are I would not have had to go to criminal court for assisting an officer, but the civil case that could have been brought against me would have killed all my income. Now I am signed up for SCD knowing that they have my back if anything like this should happen again and I have to use force.

Thanks again to everyone there at the We Like Shooting show. Rock on

Sincerely

Matt L

The Hartman MH1 Reflex Sight Sets a New Bar for Optics

Unique USB Recharging, IR Remote Control Activation, Sleep Mode & Memory Chip are just three of the many game-changing features built in the MH1 reflex sight.

MH1 Hartman Reticle
Tullytown, Pa. (November 2015)Hartman Ltd., a new innovative optics company, is proud to announce the ultimate red dot reflex sight: the MH1. Designed to meet the rigorous demands of worldwide armed forces, law enforcement and sportsman alike, the MH1 Reflex Sight is unlike any red dot reflex sight ever created. The MH1 breaks new ground in field of view, reticle design, quick reaction, user interface and battery efficiency.

The patent pending advanced red dot sight offers the largest field of view through the sight, instantly improving target acquisition and situational awareness in day and night scenarios. The MH1 produces a near “0” parallax increasing accuracy. The unique reticle helps keep the firearm on a vertical plane using balancing lines at 3 and 9 o’clock with a centered red dot. The reticle also always stays on target independently of the operator’s eye location in the MH1 window.

CEO and Co-Founder Lt. Col. (t.) Mikey Hartman of the IDF and MH1 Red Dot Reflex Sight.

CEO and Co-Founder Lt. Col. (Ret.) Mikey Hartman of the IDF and MH1 Red Dot Reflex Sight.

The MH1’s innovative design allows operators to attach additional magnifiers or night vision devices behind the sight. Once attached, the operator will not have any difficulty accessing the controls of the MH1 for both left and right-hand shooters.

For operators in the field, battery use and preservation is critical to mission success. The MH1 offers a different approach to battery consumption from other reflex sights. The sight charges via a USB rechargeable battery plugged into any wall socket, computer or lighter. A single backup CR123 battery installed provides extended battery life. Additionally, the MH1’s sleep mode and dual 30 degree motion sensors only activate the sight when a shooting movement occurs, greatly enhancing battery life.

The MH1 red dot reflex sight is built to MIL-STD-810F and designed to perform in the most challenging environments. A composite reinforced polymer housing protects the interior technologies and a forged aviation grade aluminum QD mount and base keep the MH1 operating under the most extreme conditions. The sight is pressure filled with nitrogen gas and fully sealed to prevent fogging or dust from entering the sight. The outer surfaces of the window have been specially coated to produce high clarity with no mirror like reflection from the objective side of the sight that would give away the user’s position, an extremely valuable benefit for law enforcement and military personnel.

PTT
Options for the MH1 include a custom user interface that allows the user to reprogram some of the MH1’s features and customize the sight for various sleep mode activation time and reticle brightness levels, motion sensors and more. Another option is the ambidextrous infrared push-to-transmit (PTT) strap, making the MH1 the only remote-controlled reflex sight. The PTT activates the sight and controls reticle brightness levels (10 levels – 5 for day and 5 for night). It allows the user to control the sight without disengaging the supporting hand from the weapon, thus always remaining ready and reducing critical reaction time.

The new Hartman MH1 Reflex Sight is available in black, tan or green with an MSRP of $650.00. The optional remote control strap (PTT) has an MSRP of $49.95.

The Nanuk Hard 995 Rifle Case by Plasticase

Perhaps one of the best hidden gems from the 2015 SHOT SHOW was the discovery of the Nanuk series of hard cases for firearms and equipment from its parent company, Plasticase. I had the pleasure of meeting Frank Vitiello, the sales manager for the company. Frank took the time to explain the company’s goals of offering affordable and durable products for all tactical and outdoor needs in the form of professional looking hard cases of all sizes. Immediately, these cases looked very well made and ready for any abuse you could throw at them.

995 2

Soon after returning home from the show in Las Vegas I reached out to Plasticase and had a model 995 rifle case sent for review. Offered in three colors, the sample that arrived was a sand colored tan that would blend very well in several different types of environment. Immediately upon its arrival, the case had proved its durability by surviving UPS delivery. The cardboard shipping box was barely held together with packing tape as the seams were ripped and holes torn all across all four sides of the box. Three snips from a pair of scissors freed the box’s contents from the over worked tape. As I inspected the actual hard case once fully removed, I could not find even the first scratch to its surface. With visions of a 200lb gorilla jumping up and down on the shipping box all day in the back of the UPS truck, I start by commending Plasticase’s Nanuk division early on in this review.

Measuring L52.0 x W14.5 “x H6.0″ interior and L55.1″ x W17.3″ x H6.6” exterior, this is NOT a small case. The model 995 case is designed for the fully secure transport and storage of a high end long gun with sensitive optics. In all the harsh conditions I have put my precision rifle through during my tenure as a Law Enforcement sniper unit; I would not have hesitated in packing it in this case. Constructed from impact resistant NK-7 resin like all the cases by Nanuk, the model 995 is water tight offering an IP67 rating due to its rubber inner gasket.

With a weight of 21.6lbs empty, this is not a light weight and frail case by any means. While it is not the heaviest hard case I own in my collection, it does make me grateful of its polyurethane bottom mounted wheels and ergonomic spring-loaded handles when I have to travel any significant distance to load or unload its contents. The optional foam inserts offer very little added weight but are worth the extra money to be able to customize the case’s interior specifically to your needs.

One of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to cases is the lid construction. All too many times I have opened the lid too far and popped the lid off its hinges or popped a rivet. The Nanuk 995 offers a positive 110 degree lid stop to prevent any incidental damages caused by drops or over pressure on the hinges. The lid is secured tightly for transport with Plasticase’s patented power claw latching system that locks up tighter than a bank vault. For added security and to meet airline requirements, the cases can be pad locked through four stainless steel supported hasps located around the case. Additional eyelets surround the case as well for any tie down needs you may have.

Owning Firearms and being from one of “Those” States

I live in Massachusetts, and I own firearms. There, I said it. There are a lot of people outside of MA/New England that think once you head east; firearms are not a normal “thing.” I got into firearms late in life after a buddy took me shooting and I was hooked. Shooting for me is very mental, thinking about my form, the round count, the objective – all of these allow me to think about something that is not work-related.

Image_1

Something that has come up recently in the news is the American Suppressor Association (ASA) working to have a bill introduced into Congress that would remove suppressors from the NFA (National Firearms Act of 1934). Representative Matt Salmon (AZ) introduced the Hearing Protection Act (HPA) on October 22, 2015. Part of this provision, if passed, would refund the $200.00 tax stamp to applicants that purchased a suppressor after the October 22nd filing date. Filing of this legislation is something, in this writer’s opinion, that is overdue. Unfortunately. Even if this was to pass through Congress and signed into law by the President, which is very unlikely at this time, but you need to start somewhere. The state that I live in, Massachusetts bans the use of suppressors today.

ASA Logo

But, in Massachusetts, we have grassroots organizations such as GOAL (Gun Owner’s Action League) who have worked to preserve the 2nd amendment rights and have helped with like-minded legislators to introduce new legislation into the State House. This summer, GOAL worked with Auburn Legislator, Paul Frost to introduce Bill H.1305 (exciting name, right?) to the Joint Committee of the Judiciary to remove suppressors for Section 10A of Chapter 269 of the Massachusetts General Laws. As of this writing, the proposed legislation is still in committee.

GOAL Logo

If this legislation were to move from committee to a vote, and eventually signed into law. It would allow the residents of Massachusetts to be able to purchase suppressors, like 40 other states in the Union. Massachusetts is most definitely in the minority here. According to the ASA, since 2014, 11 out of those 40 states made suppressors legal to own or to hunt with.

GOAL has a nice feature on their website; you can search using your zip code to find your local legislator(s) and write to them in support of legislation like the one above.

When people hear the words Silencer or Suppressor, most think of a super-secret ninja assassin that shoots bullets in 100% silence. I hate to destroy that Hollywood myth, but that is not the case. According to the statistics posted on the ASA’s website, the use of a suppressor can reduce the decibel level anywhere from 20 to 35 dBs, which is the same amount as wearing inner ear or earmuff style hearing protection. You still hear the shot, but at much more comfortable levels. For newer shooters, the recoil is reduced, which helps when teaching the fundamentals of shooting. If your range is in a residential area, you have reduced noise pollution.

A great analogy that I have heard, is would you drive a car without a muffler? The majority of you would not – that is all a suppressor is, a muffler on the end of your firearm. I would love to see them legalized in Massachusetts, owning one (or more) would help reduce the noise around me at the range, would help me protect my hearing, and increase my enjoyment when shooting.

If you live in MA – I strongly suggest getting involved with GOAL (Gun Owner’s Actin League). They are our advocate group within the state, working to push Pro-2A bills through the state house and protecting the rights we have today.

Second Call Defense

Everyone who signs up gets a free We Like Shooting pint glass, just send your email confirmation to feedback@welikeshootingpodcast.com

Correction from last week –

http://www.secondcalldefense.org/self-defense-news/10-things-you-should-never-do-after-self-defense-shooting

First  5

Call 911 in a panic. No matter how tough you are, your body and brain will be a mess after you pull the trigger and see a body lying on your living room floor. Take a moment to breath deeply, calm down, and get your thoughts in order before you call authorities. Consider learning 4-square breathing to relax.

Leave the scene. Unless you’re in danger, stay put. You may feel an overwhelming need to seek out friends or family or run away, but don’t. That could be misinterpreted as fleeing the scene which could give the appearance of guilt.

Move or tamper with evidence. It’s natural to want to “tidy up,” especially if you’re in your home. This is unwise. Touch nothing. If there are others nearby, make sure they do the same.

Have your gun in your hand when the police arrive. Police will be responding to a “man with a gun” or “shots fired” call and won’t know who’s the good guy and who’s the bad guy. They will view anyone holding a gun as a threat and will deal with you as such. In short, reholster your gun or set it down if you don’t want to get shot.

Make a statement to police before you talk to your lawyer. Police have a job to do and you need to be cooperative, but you don’t want to say too much because anything you say will be used against you. What should you say? There are many opinions on this, but here is one formulation:

My gun is laying over there, and that is the gun that I used to shoot my attacker in self defense because I feared for my life. I do not want to say anything else until I have had time to talk to my attorney. I want to cooperate with the investigation completely, but I’m very upset right now and I need to talk to my attorney first. I hope you understand.

These guys really know how to put out…….a great podcast. Even though Lil is the reason I listen, I still get a little hot-n-heavy when I hear Shawn’s buttery smooth voice introduce the show. Don’t forget about Aaron though, he’s known as the Machine Gun Moses, and I want to let you know that when he starts nerding out on guns or chewing loudly, my legs get a bit week and I feel like I want him to part my thighs like the Red Sea. Oh, and of course Jeremy. Without that big hunk of Marine, I wouldn’t know how good it felt to be choked while I jerked it. In all seriousness, these guys are well informed and will tingle your jingles. So grab your Fireclean, some tissues, and a bottle of ranch, and settle in for a podcast worth your time.

Guardian Concealment Holsters

I have been carrying concealed for 34 years and my philosophy has been if I knew I was going to be engaged today which gun would be best for me to have. I always choose a full size gun whether it is a 9mm with 19 rounds or a full size 1911 loaded with nine 45 ACP. I have had one incident in all those years that was to be just a quick run to the corner store. I lowered my guard and went without a weapon, which almost cost me my life. Never again always ready for the fight. Now living in Florida can be challenging in concealing a full size handgun. Due to the climate we usually dress light and that is where Guardian Concealment comes in.

I had a need for a in the pants holster that could help me conceal a 1911 while just wearing shorts and a t-‐shirt, casual dress or formal attire.  I believe I found it with the hybrid holster.

Guardian Concealment’s Hybrid holster comes standard with some awesome features. They are handmade to order in the USA and come standard with the following features:

Premium Wickett & Craig black cowhide

Holsters come standard with black stitch

Inside the waistband and outside the waistband compatible

Adjustable retention, degree of tilt, and ride height

Genuine .08 thickness kydex

Holsters come standard with 1 1/5 – 1 3/4 US made metal spring clips.

Out of the box I saw a work of art with the materials and design of this holster. It was like something you wanted to display instead of use. The leather was soft and pliable, the black carbon fiber kydex was stunning and all the edges were smooth and clean. A pack of extra screws and rubber “o” rings came with the holster. You also receive a personalized letter from Guardian Concealment thanking you for your purchase and explaining use and maintaining your new holster.

Guardian 1

First thing you notice in preparing to use the Guardian Concealment Hybrid holster is, it is not just a holster. It is a system that has to be set for the user and broke in just like a new pair of shoes. This holster can be adjusted many ways from high or low carry and straight or canted pistol positioning. It took me a couple of times to test it and make minor adjustments to the belt clip location for that perfect fit. Once I had it adjusted, the holster broke into the 1911 and me very quickly.

Guardian 2

During carry I found that the holster spread the weight of my gun out around 1/3 of my belt.  I also found I did not feel my aggressive grip or the safety digging into my side.  Learning to put the holster on was difficult at first until I found where it fit best.  Just like anything else a little practice improved my time on getting it set in the same place every time. Drawing the weapon with this holster was not a problem and re-‐holstering had to be practiced some just due to how low I wear the gun.

Guardian 3

Like any new piece of equipment you should train with it to become proficient at using it in a fight.  I am very active in the thing I do and had no problem with the weapon retention of this holster, over all this a very good product.  The holster depending on the options you choose is between $69.00-‐79.00 USD, which I believe is a great deal for what you get. Check out this holster and other products from Guardian Concealment at www.guardianconsealment.com .
