BENEFITS OF PRIVATE INSTRUCTION

There are many reasons why working with a Firearms Instructor in private training environment can be key to achieving your shooting goals. Whether they be self-defense based, competitive sports-driven or for just fun recreational time at the range,  Here are six critical reasons why you should have a private session or two, or three, as well as the benefits that you are likely to achieve.

1. You Don’t Know Where to Start. Walking into the range for the first time or wanting to go shooting with your family can be a scary task. From choosing a gun and pairing it with the correct ammunition, to knowing the rules and etiquette, to understanding the 5 basics of marksmanship, there is a lot to know. Having a private lesson will give you an introduction to all these things and set you in the right direction to have a fun and safe time at the range.

2. You Have a Specific Illness, Injury, or Condition. It can be as simple as mastering cross-eye-dominate skills or learning how to see your sights again after Lasik. It might be a more complex physical limitation and you need options for how to make it work for you. It can even be an emotional road block or trauma you want to overcome. Working 1:1 with your instructor can be a very personal and private experience, so be ready to answer questions so they can better understand where you are starting from and help you make the proper adjustments.

3. You’re Not Seeing Results. Maybe you have taken a group class or had a family member teach you. At first everything was great, and you are satisfied with your target. Maybe you picked up a bad habit while working on new drills and don’t realize the mistakes you are making that are getting in the way of your progress. Having a tune-up is very valuable to get back on track or in some cases change course with a new gun, different ammo, change the holster, vision assessment, etc.

4. Help You Set Realistic Goals. Just like any task in life you must have a goal and plan to achieve it. If your intent is to get your carry permit or to participate in action shooting sports it can feel overwhelming to get started. Setting goals, especially attainable goals, will keep you on track. This will help you with training as well as purchasing the gear and equipment that you need and avoiding purchasing gear that you don’t need.

5. Fit Range Time Into Your Schedule. Sometimes fitting a group class or event into your schedule is not easy, especially if you work or have kid activities nights and weekends. Scheduling a lesson with a private instructor will give you the flexibility to choose a time that works best for you.

6. Help you develop a Personalized Training Plan. It may not be financially possible to have a private lesson on a weekly basis, even monthly. Your instructor can help you plan for the time you spend on your own and at AG & AG events, so that your range time and dry-fire practice is more meaningful. Use your Shooting Journal to track your progress and schedule a quarterly tune-up session with your instructor.

SAS Hero Goes to Work

While the death toll in Nairobi is now listed at 21 it could have been much worse.

And largely thanks to the quick efforts of the Kenyan Special Forces, who learned from the mall devastating mall attack, and an unnamed SAS Special Operator who kitted up and ventured in solo to tell al-Shabab what was up.

The man was out shopping, on a furlough from his training liaison mission with the Kenyans, when al-Shabab decided it was time to get their terror on again.

This fine English gentleman would have none of it. He grabbed body armor and his rifle then breached into the hotel, rescuing trapped patrons and dropping bad guys to never rise again.

Outstanding sir, outstanding.

Panteao Productions Review – DVD Training

I know you’ve seen them, the ads, you can’t escape them. Panteao Productions and their DVDs are everywhere. They promise a dose of firearms training in the same vein as the old school Magpul Dynamics training DVDs. They get well known firearms trainers from the around the entire industry. This includes well known trainers like Pat Mac, Kyle Lamb, and the late Pat Rogers. Most people know the DVDs, but they also offer a streaming plan where you can watch the entire collection for 20 bucks a month, or even less if you buy a year ahead. I’ve long pondered buying one of these DVDs and checking it out, and only recently have I done so.

My reservations weren’t anything to do with Panteao Productions, but with the idea of learning from a DVD versus a class made be cautious. Is it worth anything? Would I learn anything? Well, it was time to make a decision or get off the pot. So I bought one, no big surprise to anyone, especially the editor, but I purchased Shotgun Operator taught by Bill Jeans and dived in over the last few nights.

The Panteao Productions Review

From a production standpoint the Panteao Productions DVDs are well made. The production is professional. Everything is easy to hear, and well shot and easy to see. They keep things simple and nothing ever gets stupid with loud generic rock or vanity camera angles. They are selling training, and instruction, and not just trying to make the instructors just look cool.

Bill Jeans was a Marine, a cop, and an instructor at Gunsite before starting his own company. He gives very clear and easy to follow instructions. His laid back attitude is easy to listen to. He’s the kind of instructor to seek out. He never says this is the only way to do something, its always just away. Bill talks gear and equipment and guns and never says this is the best and only one. He tells you what he likes for sure, but never forces his choices onto you.

The Panteao Productions DVD goes into the very basics of shotguns. Types, designs, ammo choices, basic gun handling and more. The information presented is the essential basics of the combat shotgun and it slowly goes more and more in-depth.

Firearm Safety for Real

Safe gun ownership is a critical subject that is particularly important in our nation. A 2017 survey made in 2017 states found that there is at least one firearm in 42% of American households, regardless of the size or caliber. In fact, the U.S. is number one worldwide regarding in the number of firearms per capita.

When you think about buying and using a handgun or a rifle, whether it’s for hunting or just personal safety, you should consider some things first. First of all, any felony, violent crime and certain other mishaps will prevent your becoming a legal gun owner. Some states require a “permit to purchase” a firearm. For the majority of states that don’t require a “permit to purchase”, you’ll just need to fill the BATFE 4473 form, do pass a background check, and you can call yourself a gun owner.

Most gunowners in the U.S. are males (62%), whilst 22% of women own a firearms. Firearms that are suitable for women to carry may need to be smaller in order to fit in the female hand or a purse.

Once you are a gun owner, there are some vital safety measures that you’ll need to follow. It is obvious that guns can kill or injure, so following some simple rules will get keep you out of trouble for your own and others’ sakes.

The classic Four Rules of Gun Safety Colonel Jeff Cooper taught are the foundation. Here are my takes on them:

Make sure your firearm is unloaded when you are not shooting

Never point your gun at anything you would not shoot in case of an unintentional discharge.

When a revolver’s cylinder is empty, it can’t fire. But even if the magazine is out of a semi-automatic, you still cannot know if a round may still be loaded in the chamber. So be sure to rack the slide to ensure that it is empty. Then you can be sure that the gun is safe to store.

Treat every firearm as if it is loaded

Do not ever point the gun at something you are not willing to shoot. Even if it is intended as a joke, pointing a gun at anyone is NO joke.

Always keep your gun clean and check it frequently so that you don’t get dust or dirt inside. Guns can jam or misfire if they are dirty and, rarely, can even explode if the barrel is totally jammed. If you’re not sure how to clean the weapon thoroughly properly, ask for assistance from someone who knows how. And always ensure it is unloaded before cleaning.

Always be sure that you’re using the ammo designed for the gun you own, as some rounds can appear identical but can damage the gun if not intended for it.

Meopta USA Introduces New Dichroic Reticle Technology with Battery-Free Illumination

TAMPA, FL, January 14, 2019 – Meopta USA is now offering groundbreaking new dichroic reticle technology in its MeoStar 3-12×56 riflescopes.  Meopta’s patent-pending dichroic DichroTech coating enables reticles in multiple color configurations to automatically adjust color tone and intensity in varying light conditions without the use of a battery.   DichroTech provides maximum contrast and visibility, enhancing target acquisition while speeding and improving shot placement.

Meopta’s first DichroTech reticle with battery-free, color-contrast enhancement, the 4D DichroTech, features a 4 MOA red dot in the center of the reticle.  The dot and crosshairs are activated by ambient light for enhanced target acquisition. The proprietary patent-pending, light-sensitive dichroic coating appears bright red in daylight conditions but in lower light, depending on the background, the red may change to a light green color for better contrast.  The reticle color adapts for optimal visibility depending on the amount of available ambient light while the dot in the center draws the eye to the point of aim. In addition, unlike the standard black reticle, the colored reticle is mostly transparent, which allows for a more complete field of view, particularly at higher magnifications.

“We are excited to bring this exceptional reticle technology to the hunting and shooting communities,” said Randy Garrison, Director of Meopta USA Sport Optics. “Meopta DichroTech reticles feature a leading-edge coating that enhances contrast and improves aiming ability in varying light conditions.  This reticle technology offers hunters and shooters a convenient alternative to battery-powered illuminated riflescopes.”

The Meopta DichroTech 4D reticle is designed for maximum visibility in varying light conditions; with ambient light it provides significant target contrast at dawn, dusk, and throughout the day.

Initially, the Meopta DichroTech 4D reticle will be offered in the 30mm MeoStar R1 3-12×56 with a first focal plane reticle, and MeoStar R1r 3-12×56 with a second focal plane reticle.  Meopta will offer many more DichroTech reticle options in a variety of riflescopes in 2019.

For a limited time, Meopta will be offering these riflescopes with 4D DichroTech reticle at the same price as its non-dichroic # 4 reticle.

Peak Felony?

How many of these objects become felonies by crossing the wrong state line?

On Thursday, to the surprise of no one, Dianne Feinstein, the one trick pony of California politics, introduced her new Assault Weapons Ban. This, while two different versions of background check legislation float to and fro.

The way things are going with threats of even more felony-level firearms restrictions, I’m wondering when we reach a point of “Peak Felony”? Remember how people used to talk about “Peak Oil”? Well this would be “Peak Felony” – when the maximum number of otherwise lawful citizens become overnight felons by legislation or felons by non-compliance.

I’m no lawyer, and I don’t play one on TV, but it seems to me that after a certain number of felonies, the threat of more just doesn’t seem to be a deterrent anymore. You know – kinda like with criminals?

I’m a physician. One felony conviction will lose me my license to practice. So if possession of one 30-round magazine accidentally in the State of New Jersey destroys my life and livelihood, will possessing twenty of them make me even MORE imprisoned and unemployable? What if for the sake of argument I also happened to own a bump stock or two?  How about some “assault weapons” for good measure? How felonious can an overbearing government MAKE a mild mannered pediatrician? Just asking – that wasn’t a dare, really.

When everything to do with firearms is a felony, why care about one more? Why care about the law at all?  Is the criminal penalty even a deterrent anymore when they’ve made a mockery of it all? The existing criminals don’t seem deterred, so will most freedom-loving citizens even bat an eye when the rubber really hits the road?

The manipulators in government CREATE felons out of thin air, and usually not just once. EVERY object that they don’t like becomes a felony – whether it’s a piece of a firearm or an accessory for a firearm or even defensive rounds to put into a firearm. The felonies rack up like the meter on a gas pump. Soon it’s hard to tell in which state (or county or city) you’re a normal citizen and in which ones you are a dangerous criminal. Don’t blink on the interstate. One wrong exit could have you white-knuckle driving through a prohibited city.

“Execute S.66”

With the 116th Congress underway Senator Palpatine.. excuse me, Feinstein, has once again introduced an assault weapons bill to the floor of the U.S. Senate

S.66 – A bill to regulate assault weapons, to ensure that the right to keep and bear arms is not unlimited, and for other purposes.

The full text of the bill is not up on congress.gov as I am writing this, however it will be shortly and the link will take you to it.

It promises to be an arduous and asinine legalese that separates certain weapon types from owners based on zero appreciable data suggesting we can shift mass casualty attack deaths lower with its passage. Criminalize millions of American citizens for the ownership of their inanimate property… because scary, or something… for the children.

Far be it from gun control proponents to actually and objectively use some projectionary violence theorem. Perish the thought that they work with experts instead of folk whose jobs rely on them delivering the answers legislators want to hear instead of objective analysis of risks and threats.

Gun control proponents are in an abusive relationship with the thought “Weapons BAD!” and when ever any facet to the contrary is pointed out they cling to their lie like “No! I know the real thing. The rest of you are insane!”

But here we go again… can we fire her already? I think we’ve long surpassed the whole ‘definition of insanity’ criteria.

M16A5 Concept

The M16 is the most iconic “Old War Horse” of the modern militaries. Entering service in 1964. The M16A1 rolled out in ’69. The M16A2 in ’83 and finally the M16A4 started entering the field in 1998.

In 2007 you could still find a mix of A2’s and A4’s in the Marine Corps fleet armories, I trained on the A2 while the series behind me received A4’s. Here at the end of 2018 I bid farewell to the A2 from National Guard armories in Michigan, replaced by the M4A1.

The M16 is 20 years from it’s latest revision and technology, especially ancillary tech, has never been at a faster pace for development.

Slings, optics, triggers, and fire control were all still in a mid development latency when the A4 rolled out, then everything got a kickstart from GWOT. The thought of keeping things as close to ‘legacy’ as possible to avoid confusion was as prevalent as it was misguided in larger military circles also.

The A4 is due for a revision for continued greatness and modernity…

A5 Concept: Product Improvement Program

I can’t leave things stock

A few critical updates in various schools of thought have rolled into the tactical rifle sphere since the A4. The rifle in 1998 was essentially an A2 hoping to catch as many upgrades as feasible, but not knowing necessarily what those would be.

Here are the four foci.

  1. Optics are standard
  2. Lights are important
  3. Ambidexterity has its place
  4. Nice triggers make a difference

The Anti-Gun Association on Aging

[Ed: Aging Today and AgeBlog, the American Society on Aging’s media, published an article, “Grandparents,Gun Violence and Gun Policy”, this fall.  Teri Kennedy, a PhD grandmother with the School of Social Work at Arizona State University, advocated the straight gun restriction party line, from the claim that the Dickey amendment “barred”research to universal background checks, banning “assault weapons” and “high-capacity magazines”, and “gun safety technology”. OK, we have no disagreement with “promot[ing] safe storage of guns” (interpreted correctly) or “improve[d] access to and delivery of mental health services”. But, seriously . . .

DRGO correspondent Warren Lind, LCSW, a member of the ASA took enough interest to send the editor an extremely well- documented rebuttal. It follows here, with excerpts from the editor’s reply. His biggest may have been including my name as a co-author.]

To the Editor:

Dr. Kennedy’s article does not have anything to do with the goals and vision of ASA and as such should have never been accepted as an article. (See  http://www.asaging.org/2015-2020-strategic-plan-summary.)
