Before I get started, we are looking for your stories. Tell us a story of how you got into guns or the shooting world and if we pick your story, we’ll have you join us for our 100th episode! http://welikeshooting.com/story and submit!

We reached 200 Patreons!

New patches and restocks! http://welikeshooting.com/shop

Our panel tonight consists of –

  • A YouTuber with a DIY attitude and robotic gun inventor –  Savage1r

Thoughts on the gun industry today compared to when we started?

Websites or youtube channels that we use now that we didn’t then?

Do you get to shoot more now and is it as fun?

How have we as individuals changed since we started?

How is firearms culture different now than it was two years ago?

What is the gun you want more than any other now?

Second Call Defense

Lil Reads tonight!

18-year-old armed robber Tamon J. Stapleton stormed into the the Breadbox and forced the female employee behind the counter and towards the register at 2:30 AM with a gun to her head. One of the employee’s male friends happened to be in his car in front of the Breadbox. He retrieved his legally-owned pistol from his car and ran into the store, firing a single shot that struck Stapleton in the head, killing him.

Now the mother is demanding homicide charges be pressed against the good guy.

“If the store clerk would have killed him I would have felt different,” said Stapleton. “But because that man came into the store and killed him as he watched this robbery go on…he was not in danger. He could have dialed 911 and then went in to the store. But he didn’t, he just automatically went into the store and shot my son in the head.”

Tonight we are going to do We Like Shooting Theater sponsored by Manticore Arms. Where we re-enact movie scenes, our style. Tonight we will perform a scene from GONE WITH THE WIND.  Scarlett: will be played by Savage, Ashley will be played by Shawn, and Rhett will be played by Lil.

Scarlett: Oh, Ashley, Ashley… …l love you.

Ashley:  Scarlett!

Scarlett: I love you, I do!

Ashley: Well, isn’t it enough that you’ve gathered every other man’s heart today? You’ve always had mine. You cut your teeth on it.

Scarlett: Oh, don’t tease me now. Have I your heart, my darling? I love you, I love you.

Ashley:You mustn’t say such things. You’ll hate me for hearing them.

Scarlett: Oh, I could never hate you, and I know you must care about me. Oh, you do care, don’t you?

Ashley: Yes… …l care. Oh, can’t we go away and forget we ever said these things?

Scarlett: But how can we do that? Don’t you want to marry me?

Ashley: I’m going to marry Melanie.

Scarlett: But you can’t. Not if you care for me.

Ashley: Oh, my dear, why must you make me say things that will hurt you? How can I make you understand? You’re so young and unthinking. You don’t know what marriage means.

Scarlett: I know I love you, and I want to be your wife. You don’t love Melanie.

Ashley: She’s like me, Scarlett. She’s part of my blood and we understand each other.

Scarlett: But you love me.

Ashley: How could I help loving you? You have all the passion for life that I lack. That kind of love isn’t enough for a successful marriage… …for two people as different as we are.

Scarlett: Well, why don’t you say it, you coward? You’re afraid to marry me. You’d rather live with that fool who can’t speak except… …to say “yes” and “no” and raise a passel of mealy-mouthed brats just like her.

Ashley: You mustn’t say such things about Melanie.

Scarlett: Who are you to tell me I mustn’t? You led me on, you made me believe you wanted to marry me.

Ashley: Now, Scarlett, be fair. I never, at any time–

Scarlett: You did, it’s true you did! I’ll hate you till I die! I can’t think of anything bad enough to call you.

<<Sound of loud breaking glass>>

Rhett:  Has the war started?

Scarlett: Sir, you should have made your presence known.

Rhett:  In the middle of that beautiful love scene? That wouldn’t have been very tactful,

would it? But don’t worry, your secret is safe with me.

Scarlett: Sir, you are no gentleman!

Rhett:  And you, Miss, are no lady. Don’t think I hold that against you. Ladies have never held any charm for me.

Scarlett: First you take a low, common advantage of me, then you insult me.

Rhett: I meant it as a compliment and I hope to see more of you… …when you’re free of the spell of the elegant Mr. Wilkes. He doesn’t strike me as half good enough for a girl of your, what was it? Your “passion for living.”

Scarlett: How dare you! You aren’t fit to wipe his boots.

Rhett: And you were going to hate him for the rest of your life.

WLS 100 – Echoes of 100

Before I introduce our 100th episode, I want to say thanks to the WLS team that I talk to every week, the listeners and viewers that make me laugh every day, our editor that does a great job every week and the Firearms Radio Network.

On our 100th episode, you’d think things would be good to go by now, but… that’s not the way it went, haha.

During the intro, my scripts that play and fade music reset so we had to do that twice. A little ways into the show, I rolled over and broke the power cord for the digital recorder. There is a 20 minute portion of the show that I had to splice in from YouTube audio. Then my mic started echoing so I had to <unmute>, talk, <mute> every time I wanted to laugh or say something. All while emailing invites to keep a steady flow of guests on the show for 2 and a half hours. We did end up cutting some of the terrible echo and for that I apologize to the guests that get short changed.

Having said all that, it was still a great time and I really enjoyed ‘meeting’ and seeing the listeners that could make it.

It’s been an amazing ride that we are all excited to continue. Thanks to every guest, every advertiser, every patreon and every listener.

Thanks for all you do, all of the support and most of all WELCOME TO NEW YORK, IT’S SATURDAY NIIIII… Wait, that’s not right. Here’s to many more episodes!

-Shawn

Mankind — that word should have new meaning for all of us today.

We regret to inform you of the passing of our favorite host, Lil Shantilly. Lil passed away from a sudden cardiac arrest, following the taping of an episode where both Jeremy and Aaron managed to not make an obscene comment or drop an “F-bomb”.Oh, who are we kidding, she’s alive and well. We know hell will freeze over before anybody on this show behaves.Great show with friendly banter between friends as they discuss current events and new products related to the shooting sport with a great selection of guests.

The ‘Other Country’ Fallacy

Whenever an argument comes up for gun control, the United Kingdom and Australia are brought forth as examples where gun control ‘worked’. “Australia and the UK banned a lot of guns and instituted strict gun control and their gun crime went down, so if other countries besides the US can ‘make gun control work’ we should follow their example here”. There are a number of fallacies and biases that this line of reasoning adheres to; correlation = causation, , single cause fallacy, the ‘bandwagon’ fallacy or ‘appeal to popularity, and confirmation bias through functional fixation, otherwise known as technological determinism or genetic fallacy.Dealing with this concept from the ground up, the starting premise is that correlation proves causation. “Guns were banned/restricted in the UK and Australia, therefore gun related crime went down.”:

Correlation proves causation is considered a questionable cause logical fallacy in that two events occurring together are taken to have a cause-and-effect relationship. This fallacy is also known as cum hoc ergo propter hoc, Latin for “with this, therefore because of this”, and “false cause”. A similar fallacy, that an event that follows another was necessarily a consequence of the first event, is sometimes described as post hoc ergo propter hoc (Latin for “after this, therefore because of this”).”

There are several variables to consider when it comes to crime, first and foremost whether the removal of guns effected the crime rate positively, negatively, or at all. There are several socio-economic, cultural, and other related issues that could all have a much higher likelihood of contributing to the drop in crime. For example there are credible sources that suggest that abortion as well as the removal of lead from consumer products is closely correlated with the reduction in crime around the world.

The root assumed cause of gun crime, in this case, is guns themselves. This is what is called a single cause fallacy:

“The fallacy of the single cause, also known as complex cause, causal oversimplification, causal reductionism, and reduction fallacy, is a fallacy of questionable cause that occurs when it is assumed that there is a single, simple cause of an outcome when in reality it may have been caused by a number of only jointly sufficient causes. It can be logically reduced to: X occurred after Y. Therefore, Y caused X (although A,B,C…etc. also caused X.) Causal oversimplification is a specific kind of false dilemma where conjoint possibilities are ignored.”

The next concept that covers this line of thinking is Functional Fixedness:

Functional fixedness is a cognitive bias that limits a person to using an object only in the way it is traditionally used. The concept of functional fixedness originated in Gestalt Psychology, a movement in psychology that emphasizes holistic processing.”

Functional fixedness is also part of what is called a genetic fallacy:

“The genetic fallacy (also known as the fallacy of origins or fallacy of virtue) is a fallacy of irrelevance where a conclusion is suggested based solely on someone’s or something’s history, origin, or source rather than its current meaning or context. This overlooks any difference to be found in the present situation, typically transferring the positive or negative esteem from the earlier context.”

The underlying premise from functional fixedness and genetic fallacies is that ‘guns are designed to kill’. Because guns are designed to kill, that is the only reasonable function they will always be used for and, thus, they are inherently bad. Because guns are made to kill and are bad, if you remove guns or severely restrict them, people will not be able to commit bad acts with them and the levels of crime will drop as a result.

The overarching theory which encompases this entire line of reasoning is Technological Determinism:

Technological determinism is a reductionist theory that presumes that a society’s technology drives the development of its social structure and cultural values.”

Tracing the fallacious reasoning from the top down, the technology of firearms, being born as an instrument of war, will only influence the societal structure and cultural values in a negative, violent aspect. The negative origins of firearms creation means that all firearms can only be used in a negative fashion to inflict harm or kill as they are designed to do, therefore firearms are bad.

Now that we have climbed our way to the top of the fallacious side of the tree and understand the steps that brought us here, we will climb our way back down on the side of logic. Social Constructionism is the answer to this school of thought in that it correctly answers how firearms are actually used within the context of society:

Social constructionism or the social construction of reality (also social concept) is a theory of knowledge in sociology and communication theory that examines the development of jointly constructed understandings of the world. It assumes that understanding, significance, and meaning are developed not separately within the individual, but in coordination with other human beings….Because social constructs as facets of reality and objects of knowledge are not “given” by nature, they must be constantly maintained and re-affirmed in order to persist. This process also introduces the possibility of change: i.e. what “justice” is and what it means shifts from one generation to the next.”

Social Constructionism tells us that society is not forced into a pre-determined path based upon the origins and design of specific technology. Rather, it tells us that technology, once created and distributed to society, is molded and reimagined according to the needs of the people. This theory allows us to look, logically,  at how certain societies choose to use firearms, by examining the data available instead of relying on assumptions. As I discussed in my first article, in the United States, we have seen an increase in the number of guns and gun owners. Not only that, but the instances of guns being used in crime has dropped dramatically while the overwhelming number of guns are used for lawful positive purposes. This is not saying that more people having access to guns causes gun crime (or crime in general) to go down, this is simply saying that there is no correlation between people having access to guns and increasing crime/gun crime. Without correlation you cannot have causation.

One concept we must establish before going any further is that of sets and subsets. Crime is the overall set with which we are referencing. Underneath that master umbrella term, there are several subsets and subsets of subsets. There is assault, rape, homicide, lewd behavior, so on and so forth. Since we are talking about firearm homicides, we have to understand that firearm homicides rest within the larger subset of all homicides. Since there is this nesting property, it is logical to assume that if one were to eliminate an entire subset of firearm homicide (banning/restricting firearms in this case), the overall homicide rate would drop in relation to that elimination. Let’s examine the two countries in question.

Looking at the graph for Australia below, we can see that in 1996 there was a massive gun buyback in Australia that removed 660,959 firearms that were deemed dangerous and illegal. From 1996 to 2000 there was an increase in the number of homicides and it wasn’t until 2001 when homicides returned to 1996 levels. Between 1990 and 2010, the number of homicides went from just over 300 to just over 250. So, not only did the gun control not result in a drop in homicides, the change in the number of homicides over a 20 year period equates to a 16% change.

Next, let’s examine the UK. Britain banned handguns in January 1997, not only did the homicide rate go up, but it jumped quite dramatically. In the graph below, it shows that the period between 1999 and 2004 saw the homicide rate jump from 11.6 to 18 per million people. From 2004-2010 there is just as dramatic a drop as the previous years. While it’s not causal, the second graph below shows that the UK increased the number of police between 2001-2005 from roughly 122,000 to 142,000. A second interesting correlation is that when Britain decided to start reducing the police force in 2011, there is a slight corresponding increase in crime as well.

britain homicide rate

britain cops

The logical assumption, if firearms are removed from the equation when it comes to gun homicide, is that the number of gun related homicides crimes will drop as well as the overall homicide rates. While the number of gun specific homicides may have been reduced, the number of homicides either increased, maintained the same level, or decreased extremely slightly over the same period of time. What this means is that there was method replacement. Along with still using some percentage of firearms, the method of carrying out homicide simply changed and there was no net benefit to removing firearms. A person killed with a knife or a bat is just as dead as someone killed with a gun.

How does this compare to the United States? According to the FBI crime statistics, homicide has dropped just over 48% between 1993 and 2013. During a time period where both Australia and the UK saw an increase in homicide rates and then returned to a base line or just below, the United States has ONLY seen a downward trend in homicide. This was not just a small change, like Australia’s 16%, but over 3x that drop.

US Homicide Rates

In all fairness, the United States homicide rates are much higher than both Australia and Australia, the US is at 4.2 per 100k while Australia is at 1.1 and the UK is at 1.0. It’s also worth noting that both Australia and the UK had historically always had relatively low homicide rates while the US’s has always been higher. It’s all a matter of putting things into perspective, what two countries have claimed to have reduced homicides did not, the US’s path was the opposite and it correlated with a drop in homicides. We cannot conclude much, but the pattern is that enacting strict gun control does not have a positive effect (a drop) on the homicide rates. There is a falling homicide (and crime) rate in America that is still far higher than other countries, but it is clear that the root causes are much more complex than some people would like to believe.

No longer a 3-gun virgin

SoCo 3-gun

I attended a SoCo 3-gun match run by match director, Kevin Travis. SoCo 3 Gun hasn’t been around long but they are already doing some amazing things and I expect it will be one of the premier matches in Colorado before too long. I had the opportunity to spend some time with Kevin before the match. After I signed up, he knew it was my first match and he invited me to his practice session a couple of days before go time.

We practiced some fundamentals and my pistol work was good, but I think he could tell that my shotgun skills were severely lacking. And by that I mean I barely knew how to use my shotgun. He taught me how to unload quickly, worked on loading techniques, shooting shotgun while moving and more. I felt bad that I was taking up his practice time, but he was incredibly gracious.

Here is some footage from the practice session provided by Eggleston Munitions.

The following day he invited me over to work on my shotgun as the Remington Versamax is notorious for being terrible to load. We broke out the Dremel and widened out the loading port and also replaced the tube spring to improve my reloads. He also made me some practice shells to work out with instead of my red snap caps.

I asked him why he spent so much time working on the matches, helping people out and teaching people and his answer surprised me.

“To advance the sport”

Answers like that are why I love the shooting industry. Kevin noticed that the major matches throughout the country had some amazing stage designs and gadgets and he wanted to bring that to some local matches for people to enjoy but also so he could practice. You can find his training company at Travis Firearms Training, LLC and an amazing 3 gun match at SoCo 3 Gun.

Some of the cool things I saw at the match were popper targets that launched clays, a balance bridge, a spinning target, bear trap (clam shell), drop turner, knock down steel, Texas star and tons of other targets. The stages were not easy and required planning and strategy, but at the same time were really fun. I’ve seen similar stuff on 3-Gun Nation, but nothing this cool in local USPSA matches.

Some great video of the awesome stages provided by Eggleston Munitions

How did it turn out?

I did ok, finishing 16 out of 29 however I learned a ton. First, I need to get my equipment dialed in. I took a brand new rifle and after two stages it completely quit functioning. I took my normal competition rifle as backup and finished the match with no rifle problems. In the first stage, my shotgun was not functioning at all and I had to run a stage with only 4 shells in the tube. I was able to dial it in after the first stage, but between shotgun and rifle issues, I was 3 stages down quickly. The other two stages I finished 6th and 10th.

Can’t wait for the next match and glad I finally sacked up and shot some 3-gun!

School shooting and why I am glad to hear about it

Esme Deprez writes inn BloombergBusiness that trap shooting is the fastest-growing sport in Minnesota high schools. The first thing I expected to see was gun control advocates up in arms (see what I did there?) and foaming at the mouth to have this trend stopped. Shockingly, there is very little backlash. Some schools won’t allow yearbook photos with firearms but otherwise it’s fairly quiet.

“This is the best thing to happen to the shooting sports in 50 years,” said Dennis Knudson, a 74-year-old lifelong trap shooter, after watching his grandson compete. “It’s so fun to see the youngsters stepping up. It will preserve the sport, and they’ll do it for the rest of their lives.”

I’ve often stated that when we got serious about fires in school, school deaths by fire stopped. We used non-flammable building materials, taught students what to do and how to act, installed fire alarms, sprinkler systems and more. As a result, school fire deaths are almost non-existent. By approaching guns in much the same way, I theorize that we can see similar results. Education instead of fear will always be a better approach for our society.

The program’s motto is “Safety, fun and marksmanship” and offering this program as a means of education instead of the proliferation of fear is a fantastic thing for the 9,245 Minnesota students that have participated.

WLS 100 – Echoes of 100

Definitions are Definite: Defining buzzwords in gun control

If it bleeds, it leads. This is the mantra of today’s competitive news media. Though the psychology and reasoning behind it will be the topic of another article, it is important to understand that the news isn’t there to be objective and inform you, it is there to grab your attention and instill fear into you.

One of the primary strategies that many news outlets will use comes in the form of buzzwords. These buzzwords are often used incorrectly or out of context in a manner that is meant to elicit a fear response from the reader. This is especially true when it comes to terms and concepts regarding firearms and their uses, so with that in mind, this article will attempt to clarify the mistakes and/or deceptions that take place in the media.

Assault Rifle” – This is one of the most misused terms found in headlines, articles, ‘studies’, and TV news segments. The definition of ‘Assault Rifle’ is not only nationally accepted, but it’s also internationally accepted. The easiest definition of Assault Rifle to understand is, “a selective fire rifle that uses an intermediate cartridge and a detachable magazine”. Select fire means the rifle can change between semi-auto and full auto modes. Assault rifles are a subcategory of machine guns, and are therefore regulated by the NFA. Since the NFA’s inception in 1934, there have been a total of 2 homicides committed with legally owned machine guns, neither was an assault rifle. Aside from an extremely few examples of illegally acquired or modified rifles, fully automatic firearms are so rarely used to commit crimes that they are a statistical anomaly. Because of that exceedingly tiny percentage, it is within 99.99% certainty that any time a news report announces that a person has an assault rifle, it is false. When it comes to semi-automatic rifles (referred to as sporting rifles) the next definition will attempt to explain the difference between these two mechanically identical rifles. l

6

Assault Weapon” – The most important thing to know about an assault weapon is that there is no simple definition of assault weapon. There are several ‘feature’ qualifications defined under the 1994 Assault Weapon Ban, a combination of which can change a firearm that is legal to one that is illegal, despite the mechanical operating system of the two firearms being identical. A few different states have one or two feature disqualifications, but based on the flowchart above, one can have this ‘compliant’ AR-15, while not having a standard configuration. Keeping in mind that the misinterpreted or misrepresented concept of an assault weapon, a semi-automatic rifle with specific features that supposedly make them more dangerous, account for less than 2% of all gun crime, it’s disingenuous to bill these firearms as a statistically significant threat to the public.

Lets discuss a few features that suddenly turn a semi-automatic rifle into an assault weapon. First and foremost, the “high capacity clip”, this is a misnomer on a number of levels. First of all, a clip is a storage and ammunition feeding device used to fill a magazine with ammunition. Usually, clips are used in conjunction with WWII and vietnam era firearms with fixed magazines. What is implied is “high capacity magazines”, though that definition is debatable. Pistol magazines range from 5 rounds to as many as 30 or more, depending on the design of the magazine, rifle magazines can range from 5 to 100. Most modern semi-auto pistols come with magazines that accept 17 round magazines and most semi-auto rifles come with magazines that accept 30 or more round magazines. This is what is called ‘standard capacity’. The argument being floated around is that having high capacity magazine bans would prevent mass shootings from happening. However, as we have seen over the years, magazine capacity has had no impact on mass shootings whatsoever. The Virginia Tech shooter used a Walther P22 and a Glock 19, which take 10-round and 15-round mags respectively and would not be banned by most magazine restriction laws. The Washington Navy Yard shooter used a Remington 870 express shotgun that has a 7-round tube magazine. The Isla Vista shooter used pistols and had several 10-round magazines. The most recent Charleston Church shooter used a Glock pistol that takes 13-round magazines and he reloaded several times. Other shootings, like the Colorado Theater shooting and the Gabby Giffords shooting saw the assailant’s magazines jam and they either had to change guns or were tackled by nearby people. There are many more examples of shootings, but magazine capacity is not a determining factor in the ability of a shooter to commit an act of mass murder.

7

Another aspect of an ‘assault weapon’ that is curiously identified as making a firearm more deadly is a “barrel shroud”. By definition, a barrel shroud is, “a covering attached to the barrel of a firearm, that partially or completely encircles the barrel which prevents operators from injuring themselves on a hot barrel. Slides, extensions of the stock that do not fully encircle the barrel, and the receiver (or frame) of a firearm itself are generally not described as barrel shrouds, though they in fact do act as such”. The logic behind the ban is that not having a barrel shroud will prevent a shooter from firing multiple rounds in rapid succession because the barrel will heat up and they will hurt their hand, even though other parts of a gun, that perform the exact same function, would be perfectly legal. As shown in previous examples, there are handguards commonly used on rifles that are AWB compliant, which attach directly to the barrel that are not considered barrel shrouds. The reasoning behind this bannable feature is illogical and is by name only, not actual function.

A third feature that changes a firearm to an assault weapon is a pistol grip. The appeal to fear reasoning for banning pistol grip is that this feature allows for ‘spray firing from the hip’. Not only is this feature not made for that purpose, it is never used for it. This video demonstrates the difference between traditional stocks and pistol grips. Not only does the pistol grip not allow for the claim being made, but the traditional stock actually allows for faster, more comfortable firing in that position. If it hasn’t been made clear already, these features are arbitrarily chosen by activists and politicians who aren’t familiar with the mechanics of firearms in the slightest.

The bayonet lug is a feature that is also demonized for being extremely dangerous. Bayonet lugs are standard feature on most military muskets, rifles, and shotguns, and on some civilian long arms. It is intended for attaching a bayonet, which is typically a long spike or thrusting knife. The argument being put forth that this turns a firearm into an assault weapon is that the addition of a bayonet (a knife or pike that attaches to a gun) makes the gun less deadly. Despite no more than a 1 or 2 instances of someone actually using a bayonet attached to a gun in the commission of a crime, that specific feature is an anachronistic accoutrement included on firearms more as a tradition than an actual tactical appendage.

The flash suppressor is one of the last major features that is questionably responsible for turning a firearm into an assault weapon. “A flash suppressor, also known as a flash guard, flash eliminator, flash hider, or flash cone, is a device attached to the muzzle of a rifle that reduces its visible signature while firing by cooling or dispersing the burning gases that exit the muzzle, a phenomenon typical of carbine-length weapons. Its primary intent is to reduce the chances that the shooter will be blinded in low-light shooting conditions. Contrary to popular belief, it is only a minor secondary benefit if a flash suppressor reduces the intensity of the flash visible to the enemy.” It’s not exactly clear why the flash suppressor makes a firearm an assault weapon, but the only logical conclusion is that the feature performs the job it was created to do. How that creates a more deadly firearm has never been adequately explained.

The last terms that are frequently misused and mishandled by the media has to do with the claim of what “mass shootings” are and that “mass shootings are increasing”. The definition that is generally accepted by the government and academia is “a gun crime in which at least four people other than the shooter are killed.” The root of this definition comes from the FBI’s description of mass murder which is “murdering four or more persons during an event with no “cooling-off period” between the murders.”  The important distinction to note is that the main qualifiers here are the number of people killed and it happens during a singular event. It is important to recognize this because there are several activist organization who specifically attempt to re-define mass shooting so that if 4 people are shot, and not killed, it qualifies. While this may seem logical to some, it’s important to note that casting a wider net like this has unintended consequences. The intent of changing the definition is to show that more ‘mass shootings’ are occurring or their number is increasing. Unfortunately for those organizations, their own numbers prove the falsehood of those claims. With one such website, run by anti-gun activists claim that in 2013, there were 363 mass shootings. Taken at face value, and with no other context, that would seem like an alarming problem as well as a number suggesting a rising trend. However, the following year, 2014, showed the number to be 283, which is a 22% drop. If their falsely adjusted numbers are to be trusted and the trend were to follow this same pattern, there would be no mass murders within 5 years. Experts in the field, on the other hand, have a much more thorough approach that has shown that the number of mass shootings has stayed at a steady rate for over 30 years. There are a number of myths and hyperbole that are shown by the media to gain attention as well as ad revenue generating clicks.

In summation, it’s important to know that there are lots of misunderstandings, ignorance, and misinformation in the media. Some of it is driven by a desire to gain attention, some is done to push an agenda. Reporters are not experts when it comes to many different subjects, and neither are a number of activists who pretend to be, so treating what is seen on the news as gospel is a fallacious notion. When it comes to watching the news, it’s important that viewers not be swayed by straw men, appeals to fear and emotion through misuse, manipulation, and exaggeration of language. Research the terms, understand what they mean and in what context they are used so you can make well informed decisions and arguments when it comes to the subject of firearms and the media.

World 3 Gun – Does simulation provide value?

Earlier last month we met up with Charlie from 248shooter.com at World 3 Gun in Farmington Hills, MI for a day of gun fun. Billed as a training and competition arena, World 3 Gun offers all of that and more. This isn’t necessarily the 3-gun most know, as its pistol, carbine and full auto carbine, no shotgun at this point. Also, it’s airsoft.
At the Great American Outdoor Show we experienced the NRA’s 3GE (3 Gun Experience) and had a lot of fun shooting mock 3-gun courses with airsoft guns. I think we visited more than the kids did. When we met W3G owner Peter Bakatselos at one of the many shows/conventions we go to every year, we knew we had to try it.Upon entrance, there is a stand full of kit, such as belts, mag pouches, LBV, plate carriers and more. They quickly outfitted us with the gear we needed and briefed us on the guns we would be using, the equipment, the course and more. Obviously we were chomping at the bit so we got right into it. Peter preaches thinking and problem solving and we witnessed it first hand. First we did some defensive style drills on paper, a bit of moving and shooting as well as off hand and strong hand drills. From there we moved into one stage that required some thinking. The stage has a large area in the middle that has three targets attached to a robot vaccuum. You know, the kind that senses barriers and changes directions, etc. This resulted in some true chaos as you could never tell where it would be and we were always shooting at targets on the other side. The stage starts out with a cornhole game. Timer sounds, you must sink one beanbag in a cornhole board, then move to your first shooting position. Engage the moving targets, engage some other targets, run across, walk across a balance beam, shoot some more, etc.

It’s very strange how something as simple as tossing a beanbag can totally fog your brain as to the task you need to perform. Integrating these thinking exercises was actually really hard, because we hadn’t done it much before, if at all. Then we moved to another stage where our first task was to activate a swinging target, run to a barrel, open a combination lock, then engage the swinger and other targets before the swinger stopped moving (60 seconds).

Again, very difficult, in fact, even though I knew about the lock and had watched two other people do it, I completely skipped the lock and engaged the targets. I was absolutely shocked and it shows that my mind game was not prepared. This is also very important when stage planning at a shooting competition. Your mental game needs to be just as good if not better than your actual shooting skill. Through these different drills, we started exercising some parts of our shooting skills that we hadn’t previously and really exposed some gaps in critical thinking under pressure.

The culmination of what we learned, we finally entered the arena, which is set up like a tactical training / room clearing facility with puzzles sprinkled in, targets hidden, corners, windows, targets for both pistol and rifle and on and on. This was also a ton of fun and a great learning experience.

I will say that as a consumer, I don’t love their members only scheme. I would love to be able to just walk in, pay a fee and leave. The staff however was great and we had an incredible time. This is great training and an excellent supplement but not a replacement for live fire training. Even though the airsoft guns are good and the slide cycles, they do not recoil like a live firearm. Our best guess was that you would want to live fire at least as much as you airsoft train. Certain skills can be learned with airsoft and perfected with live fire. It’s not a replacement, but it is a damn good supplement and I wish there was one near me.
