Solar Failsafe

The C models have a solar cell that is the primary power source for the sight. They can, with enough light, operate with no battery installed. They only draw from their battery if there isn’t enough light to power the sight.

In theory, this significantly extends battery life.

In practice…

It significantly extends battery life. Running constant on or auto variable brightness has not resulted in any loss of reticle or electronics issues on any platform.

Shakeawake

Not shake weight. That’s completely different.

Shakeawake uses the sensor suite that auto adjusts brightness to detect when the sight is in use. A sight at rest powers down to further increase battery efficiency and the sight in motion powers up to its active setting.

In use the 515 was always on when I needed it on, indoors or out.

M.R.S. Multi-Reticle System

What?

Simple. Do you want the 2 MOA dot, standard on the micro dot lines across the market? Or do you want the circle dot reticle that sights like the EOTech are famous for?

I love the circle dot reticle, it is stupid fast. The only possible downside in the sight is that using my favorite reticle uses more power. The 50,000+ hour battery life listing is for the dot only. Turning on the ring cuts the useable life approximately in half to 20-30k hours.

What does this mean in use?

Not a damn thing.

A Lithium CR2032 costs $1.26. The battery’s in the pack you bought are more likely to expire before running through the pack. Getting into just how ridiculous the battery efficiency is in excess of a year might be a fun arithmetic exercise, but you should swap batteries annually on your gear at a minimum anyway.

Green Super LED

It is a green high efficiency LED. Where green used to be a very power hungry color Holosun has one that doesn’t eat battery at a 4:1 compared to red. Color selection doesn’t harm battery life.

Performance Review To Date

  • The 515 exhibits no signs that its daily use has atrophied its electronics suite in any capacity.
  • Use in heat/dry, heat/humid, cool/wet/humid, cold/dry, had no adverse effect. Sight functioned. No penetration of moisture or atmosphere.
  • Auto brightness setting accurately adjusts to light at the shooter’s location. Washout, a problem on all auto adjust sights, still exhibits on the 515 but is easily rectified in manual. I will run the sight in manual.
  • Under magnification, the LED projection can exhibit a visible box around the reticle on higher brightness settings. This had no impairment effect on target engagement but was worthy of note visually. When the 515 was bright enough to bleed and wash the sight housing the box, again under magnification, was noticeable.
  • The titanium body is high strength and weight efficient. Titanium is an emerging material in the space now that cost effective ways to work with it are becoming more prevalent. Titanium optic mounts will be out in force this year too.

Why Pick a 515?

An IPX8 rated, battery efficient, selectable reticle, 4 oz titanium bodied dot for under $400 on a retail shelf?

Worthy of your consideration.
