Commit To Train: After Action Review Teufelshund Tactical SMG Operators Course

Day 3

Sunday opened up on the workbench. An armorers breakdown of the MP5 and H&K’s roller delay design in general. I knew next to nothing about Roller Delayed Blowback firearms, gas operated is my home turf, and I was eager to expand that horizon.

James went over the common wear points and parts inspection, what to have on hand just in case (hint: Extractor Spring) and how to do a thorough cleaning. It doesn’t get mentioned enough but the Germans were ingeniously modular with these weapons before modularity was cool.

On the range it was time for combined fundamentals application. We ran several timed drills as individual shooters with one on one observation from the instructors.

22422 Drill: 3 Evenly spaced targets with even application and priority of fires. In short, every bad guy gets 2 quick and then they all get 2 coming back.

Rhythm, proper target transition, and pacing are all important and must be properly applied to shoot the drill smoothly and cleanly. Even a select fire weapon can look awkward and slow if you try and outpace yourself.

10/2 10/2 Transition AKA Combat Efficiency Evaluation: Firing 10 rounds (until empty) out of the carbine/subgun, transition to pistol 10 rounds (until empty), reload pistol and fire 2 rounds, holster pistol and reload carbine, fire 2 rounds carbine. The goal time for this drill is 20 seconds with all A zone hits or head shots. The 10’s went A zone and 2’s head shots. 24 rounds total. Efficiency and economy of motion are your friends here, multitasking is a bonus too, guiding the MP5 down and out of the way while drawing your sidearm.

James and Ben spent the morning and early afternoon putting polish on and removing burrs from the rough edges on our individual techniques. Small details like foot position, shoulders, or remembering to look with your eyes before starting to move even knowing where the other target is.

At 4:00 pm we wrapped up and called the line cold for a final AAR. So for the TLDR crowd here it is

Course AAR

The goal of the course was to introduce, enhance, and refine shooting techniques associated with submachinegun and pistol caliber carbine employment. Specific emphasis on the MP5, UMP, and sidearms. Voluntary course topic was armorer information. Voluntary range time included product demonstrations from Dakota Tactical

Topics covered include:

Zeroing

Reloads

Malfunctions

Transitions

Body Mechanics

Vehicle Deployment Techniques

Low Light/No Light Flashlight Use Pistol and Carbine

The course was extremely informative. Topics flowed and complimented each other. Round counts were high and each drill was very effective in its round employment. Multiple repetitions were possible on most drills and shooting both day and night provided valuable training exposure that is often hard to find.

The course covered practical lessons, deliberate practice elements, and demonstrative familiarization. Class was participant pace driven.

The only major hangup was weather related and a safety concern with rain coming down on us in the dark with tired shooters running around vehicles, we called that drill and ended training on night two.

Teufelshund Tactical through Haley Strategic Partners greatly improved my applicable knowledge on my new MP5 platform and helped push skill development at an incredibly efficient pace.

This is why you pay for professional course work.

Commit to train.

Constantly improve.

Be Professionally Violent.
