Trijicon HD Binoculars

The excellent new roof-prism HD binoculars from Trijicon are available in 8×42 and 10×42 models. Both are built on magnesium frames and feature a beefy center hinges, 42mm objective lenses and big 21mm ocular lenses.

The included, suedebacked carry harness is particularly nice.

Gray-green rubber armoring includes ribs underneath that both enhance your grip and let you set the them down without resting on the ocular or objective rims. The center focus wheel is tall, broad and grooved for one-finger adjustment. To adjust the binoculars for your eyes, place your right palm over the right-hand objective, turn the center wheel until a distant object appears sharp to your left eye. Then block the left-hand lens and spin the dial on the right-hand eyepiece to get a sharp view of the object with your right eye. You shouldn’t have to touch the right-hand dial again, or at least until your eyes change with age. Focusing with the center wheel adjusts both barrels in tandem.

The big focus wheel and center-weighted balance lend themselves to a hand-friendly shape. Two-stage, twist-up eye cups adjust eye relief. Optically, this binocular performs well above its price.

The Trijicon 10×42 we received for testing delivers bright, crisp, color-true images through multi-coated HD glass lenses. Two-stop, twist-out eyecups adjust eye relief. Mid-range in weight for top-quality 10x42s, but more compact than many, they are perfectly balanced—not front-heavy. A hinged cap covers a 1/4 x 20 tripod socket. Optically, they match the best 10x42s on our shelf, but retail for less half the price ($849; $799 for the 8x42s). Both models come with a rugged carrying case that can be attached to a pack or belt.
