Michigan Gun Legislation Slated for Tomorrow

Michigan has been hit with a Flurry of laws that are under discussion at a State level. For the first time many of them are actually laws we as gun owners may want pushed.
Here is a list of what is up for discussion tomorrow.

HB 5324, 5325, 5326, 5327, 5328, 5329 Firearm records and FOIA

A series of laws that would protect gun owner registry information from being shared with the public. This can be considered a response to what happened in NY not to long ago. A large newspaper chain sent in FOIA requests and received the names of registered gun owners then published that data in an article.
This series of legislation would limit what can be shared related to gun owner information in a FIOA request as well as who can request it. While I would like to see the gun registration done away with completely this is at least a small step in the right direction.

HB 4155 Exempt from FOIA

This is a similar bill to those listed above but less advantageous. It is recommended that we urge our representatives to pass 5324-5329 instead.

H.B. 5091, 5092 Brandishing

This is so long in the coming.
5091 exempts a person from brandishing if carrying a weapon on a sling.
5092 takes the steps to define what brandishing is.
For far to long Brandishing has been used by police to bully or arrest gun owners who legally opened carried. Due to a lack of definition on what Brandishing was it left room for interpretation. These 2 laws will define what is not brandishing such as carrying a slung rifle and what is. For our fans who open carry this is likely a welcome piece of legislation.

Check back in with us Thursday for updates on the progress of these pieces of legislation.
