Who would have thought that a Democrat would actually be supporting the right for open carry in the state of Michigan. We salute you Representative Brandon Dillon of Grand Rapids for your efforts to clarify the term brandishing as used in our current laws.
The bill HB 5092 that is under review now in the house is designed to specifically define brandishing as:
“Brandish” means to point, wave about, or display in a threatening manner.
Thia bill is one of 2 being pushed in a grass roots effort by Michigan Open Carry. The second Bill HB 5091 is being lead by Republican Representative Joel Johnson of Clare. HB 5091 is designed to define what is not brandishing:
A person who is not prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm and is in lawful possession of an openly carried firearm that is holstered or carried on a sling
These clarifications will aid both police and citizens in knowing what is and is not acceptable in the state. We encourage you all to contact your local representatives and ask them to vote in favor of these bills.
We also encourage you to support organizations like MOC who are working with legislators on both sides of the aisle in an effort to strengthen our rights.
