5.11’s COVRT Box Pack – Getting Closer to Covert?
A lot of places build packs (and messenger bags, etc.) that are described as “covert” but honestly are anything but.  Many manufacturers build gear with some a few secret compartments or hidden pockets, color it grey or black and pronounce it “covert”, as though that somehow makes things stealthy and unobtrusive. Some don’t even get that far. We’ve all seen the “Super Secret Hideaway Covert Low Profile Clandestine Ninja Operations” bag someone built in Multicam or Kryptek or Pencott and covered in PALS webbing and Velcro…because, you know, no one is going to notice that.

Now, to be fair, hook-and-loop modularity is increasingly ubiquitous, even in the non-tactical crowd. Morale patches and identifiers are much the same, but in the end they hardly allow you to blend in with everyone else on the metro (unless there’s a tactical convention in town).

You know what’s really covert? This is, or at least much more so than most “low profile” bags:

That’s Gorillafritz carrying a folding stock AK with T1 red dot and 3 mags in side – about the only sartorial clue present there is maybe the shoes – it’s certainly not the bag.

Someone carrying a weapon and gear inside a tennis racket bag or guitar case he’s modified himself, though even that is completely contextual. Anyone trying to be truly low profile needs to do so by understanding the environment he’ll be operating working in. It also has to be believable; our warrior princess Ell P could easily pull off the tennis bag look. Active Response Training‘s Greg Ellifritz might have a harder time of it.

Anyway, 5.11 recently released this COVRT Boxpack and it appeals to us for 2 reasons. One, it’s one of the few packs we’ve seen that legitimately looks like something other than a tactical backpack*. Two, it’s based on their COVRT series, which is without a doubt the best thing they have going in the pack/bag line (more than one of our minions uses the 5.11 COVRT 18; it’s an excellent pack that can take a beatin’).

Covert Box Pack

You’ll have to be the judge of whether the Boxpack is aesthetically low profile; we’ll kick it around like a USPS box marked FRAGILE and see how it holds up.

*If you go to the pack’s web page, neither the Black version nor the Storm version show a 5.11 Tactical logo up front and center; the Tundra version does. We’re not sure why that is, but we’ll ask them about it – obviously having a tactical company’s logo so prominently placed on an “covert” piece of gear is counter-intuitive; the placement of such a location might affect which one someone would want to buy.

You can find a video and additional information on their web page – just focus on the information in the video, not the unfortunate try-hard movie trailer/phone sex voice narration. That link is right here: http://www.511tactical.com/covrt-boxpack.html.

We’ve got one of these packs on the way and have high hopes for it. Stand by for some more info and add’l pictures then; we’ll see if it lives up to its potential. MSRP is $109.99.
